Clinical history

Male, 35 years old, no previous history of allergies; Tick bite on 01.06.2024 – bull’s eyes developed on 15.06.2024; Lyme borreliosis (treated for 20 days with doxybene); Bull’s eyes disappeared after 1st week of treatment

Family history

No known allergies

Present situation

Two months after the tick bite he had steak for lunch; Two hours after eating the steak, inflammation on skin at area of the stomach and itchiness started; His doctor then ordered a serological blood test using the ALEX³® allergy test

Tick bite

  • The morning after meat consumption the bite sites were reddened, inflamed and still itchy.
  • The question arises: is it meat allergy?
  • ALEX³ was performed - it covers the following meat allergens: Ach d (house cricket); Bos d_meat, Bos d 6 (cattle); Equ c_meat (horse); Gal d_meat, Gal d 7 (chicken); Loc m (migratory locus); Mel g (turkey); Ory c_meat (rabbit); Ovi a_meat (sheep); Sus d 1 (pork); Ten m (mealworm)
  • No allergens were positive, except for one: Alpha-gal!
  • Alexander shows clinically relevant sensitisation to red meat

Summary

  • Before the tick bite, Alexander had never shown any signs of meat allergy or alpha-gal syndrome (ALEX² and FOX have been tested previously)
  • He sensitised to alpha-gal by a tick bite and now shows clinically relevant allergy to meat
  • ALEX³ detected positive IgE to alpha-gal (2.25 kUA/L)
  • Strict avoidance of red meat is recommended
  • ALEX³ includes alpha-gal as regular allergen spot
